Tim Southee ran through the Sri Lanka batting order to leave the hosts struggling at 105 for five at lunch on the second day of the opening Test at Galle on Sunday.

In reply to New Zealand’s 221 in the first innings, Sri Lanka’s batting order flopped against the disciplined bowling attack of the Kiwis.

At lunch, Mahela Jayawardene was at the crease, batting on 37, accompanied by Angelo Mathews at 28 not out.

Earlier on the opening day, Rangana Herath bagged a five-wicket haul to put Sri Lanka in a strong position on the opening day of the first Test against New Zealand at Saturday.

The left-arm spinner finished with 5-65, his 11th haul of five or more wickets in a Test innings, as Sri Lanka dismissed New Zealand for 221 in the first innings before reaching 9-1 in reply at stumps.

Nightwatchman Suraj Randiv was unbeaten on three while opener Tharanga Paranavitana had yet to open his account.

Debutant opener Dimuth Karunaratne was trapped leg-before by fast bowler Tim Southee for no score.

Sri Lankan paceman Shaminda Eranga, playing only his second Test, was the other bowler to impress as he took two wickets off three overs in a lively opening spell to eventually finish with 3-51.

Brief Scores: New Zealand 221 (Brendon McCullum 68, Daniel Flynn 53; Rangana Herath 5 for 65, Shaminda Eranga 3 for 51) lead Sri Lanka 105 for 5 (Mahela Jayawardene 37*, Angelo Mathews 28*; Tim Southee 4 for 19) by 116 runs.
